Troubleshooting Your SawStop Table Saw

Here are some of the most common issues and questions that arise, along with some practical advice for handling them.

Can I re-use the blade?

The brake activation process is quite violent and will compromise the blade. At the very least, there will be several missing teeth. At worst, there may be hairline cracks or warpage. Don’t take a chance. If the blade is inexpensive, replace it. If it’s an expensive blade, send it to a qualified shop to be tested and possibly repaired. The brake cartridges are for one-time use.

Does SawStop protect against kickback?

No. SawStop protects against direct contact with the blade. You must still guard against kickback by using the protective equipment on the saw and standing to the left of the cut so as not to be in line with material that may be kicking back. You should bear in mind, however, that in a kickback situation, your hand may be pulled toward the blade faster than you can react. If your hand was already close, you could make contact with the blade. The cartridge will be activated. Use push sticks and stay away from the blade.

Can I cut wet wood?

Yes. The manual that came with your table saw explains how to test if the moisture content of the wood you want to cut is too high. If you are in the slightest doubt about what you are cutting, use the bypass mode. The manual explains that as well. A mistake with wet wood is expensive.

Can I cut Plexiglass and aluminum?

Yes. Use bypass mode.

The key is difficult to insert. Is this an issue?

Make sure the brake cartridge is in the correct position. The key can be stiff, especially when new. Make sure it’s clean. It’s okay to spray on a bit of lubricant.
