With a conventional round-headed hammer, if the nail is too short to project higher than the tips of the thumb and finger holding it, hitting yourself is practically unavoidable. This hammer's narrow cross-peen face slips easily between your fingertips, striking the nail without catching your digits. Once the nail is set, you can finish sinking it with the opposite 5/8" diameter face, which has a slightly bellied profile and lightly radiused edges to avoid marring the surrounding wood. Just over 5 oz and measuring 11 3/8" long, it is also a good choice for making precise adjustments to a molding plane blade and similarly delicate tasks.
