Skew Chisels

Traditionally used by plane makers, skew chisels were often employed for truing plane beds as well as general clean-up in the throat. They have a blade with an angled tip (skewing either to the left or right) that makes them well suited to cutting end grain, where the shearing action reduces the tendency to pull fibers. They are useful for making shearing cuts on the shoulders of tenons or for trimming the inside of mortises, where a straight tip tends to roll out the fibers. They are also one of the few tools capable of cutting right into corners of a half-lapped dovetail. Sold in pairs because you need both left- and right-hand versions to effectively work enclosed areas.
