Make It Yourself Box with Lid Kit

There’s something mysterious about a box and the secret it keeps within. With this project kit, you will learn how to make a basic wooden box with just a few hand tools. Once you have learned the basics of box making, you’ll be able to make almost anything, from drawers to cabinets.

For this project, you’ll learn how to follow a cutting plan, cut the parts for the box with a handsaw, then join them with glued butt joints. You will also happen upon a crafty approach that is sure to delight you as you open the box for the first time. While the completed box will leave everyone wondering how you painstakingly matched the wood grain, only you will know the secret.


The kit includes all the hand tools and accessories you will need, plus enough 1/4" thick ambrosia maple to make a box up to 7 1/2" long, 4" wide and 3 1/2" tall. What special items will you store in your completed box?

This box-making project was developed in collaboration with Would Works, a non-profit social enterprise that offers woodworking training to people experiencing homelessness.

It is suitable for skill levels from beginner to intermediate, for ages 14 years and up, and will take about 4 hours to make.

The kit contains everything you need to make it yourself, including over $117 of hand tools and reusable supplies, as well as access to the step-by-step video and a downloadable copy of the written instructions. Components of the kit are listed under the Specifications tab.
