If you have to drive more than a few insert nuts, a nut driver is a good choice to ensure they are inserted in the orientation you want. To make your own nut driver, you can use a bolt or machine screw with a regular nut acting as a stop (or jam nut).
Depending on your choice of insert nut and your application, there are multiple options for drivers: hex drive, slot drive or thread drive. For inserts with slot drives, the drive bits have a registration barrel that does not engage the internal threads and have wings that engage the slot. Hex drives accept standard hex drive bits, and thread drives thread directly into the insert and have to be unscrewed after insertion.
